Current status: the published leaderboard is a historical April–May 2026 model baseline (last scored 2026-05-08). Automated rescoring and new submissions are paused while the methodology is rebuilt around citation-backed evidence.
Three Dimensions of National Cope
Countries CopeCheck scores nations on three dimensions, each rated 0-100 where higher means more cope (worse). The scores combine into an overall Country Cope Score.
1. Preparedness (35% weight)
What the country is actually doing to prepare for AI displacement. We assess: government-funded retraining programs, UBI or safety net experiments, quality of AI regulation, industrial strategy for automation transition, and education system adaptability. A country with robust programs scores low (good). A country whose entire strategy is "the market will sort it out" scores high (cope).
2. Leader Cope Score (30% weight)
What the head of state or government is publicly saying about AI and automation vs what they're actually doing. We measure the gap between rhetoric and reality. Leaders who acknowledge displacement and present concrete plans score low. Leaders who insist "AI will create more jobs than it destroys" while funding nothing score high. Platitude density is a key metric.
3. Exposure Rating (35% weight)
How economically vulnerable the country is to AI automation. Services-heavy economies with large white-collar workforces score higher. Economies with diversified, harder-to-automate sectors score lower. We assess: service sector share of GDP, automation risk across key industries, dependency on routine cognitive work, and concentration in AI-vulnerable sectors.

The weighted average: (Preparedness × 0.35) + (Leader Cope × 0.30) + (Exposure × 0.35)
Cope Tiers
0-24: LUCID — Clear-eyed. Knows what's coming and is building the lifeboat.
25-44: PARTIAL COPE — Some awareness, some action, much hand-waving.
45-59: MODERATE COPE — Talks a good game. Delivers PowerPoint.
60-77: HEAVY COPE — Active denial. "Retraining" means a pamphlet.
78-100: TERMINAL COPE — Head fully in sand. Economy bracing for impact with eyes closed.
Data Sources
